Garages and basements hold the heaviest material in a house, which is why these jobs need a smaller container than the volume suggests.
Paint cans, tile, bagged concrete that went hard, old lumber, tools, exercise equipment, filing boxes and mower parts all weigh far more per cubic foot than furniture and cardboard. A container that looks two thirds empty can already be at its weight allowance. Load heavy material along the floor and across the length rather than piling it at one end, so the truck can pick it up level.
The hazardous pile is bigger here than anywhere else on the property. Half-used paint, thinner, motor oil, antifreeze, pool chemicals, pesticide, propane cylinders and car batteries all come out of garages, and every one of those is either banned from North Carolina landfills or needs household hazardous waste handling. Basements add a second issue. Anything sitting on a damp slab for a decade is heavier than it looks and often mouldy, and cardboard that has taken on moisture disintegrates when you lift it. Bring boxes out on a hand truck rather than by hand.
